CAPTAIN DINA HICKMAN
Dina's profession as a yacht captain is a journey inspired by time she spent in various places as a child. Originally from Pennsylvania, she lived in Japan by a pearl farm near Kyoto and on a beach front in the Philippines. When her fathers business took the family back to Pennsylvania, the allure of those places remained with her.
Captain Dina has creative and adventurous genes which have led her into a variety of pursuits, from rebuilding race car engines as a teenager, to designing and making jewelry. She drove across the US to the Gemological Institute of America to further her career as gemologist, goldsmith and appraiser. For someone with a fascination for travel and cultures, she relished her training as a jewelry designer which took her to places exotic and diverse.
Eventually Dinas sense of adventure got the better of her. Shed been moonlighting as a hot air balloon pilot while owning sailboats on the Chesapeake. In 2010, she sailed from Fort Lauderdale to Antigua as mate on an old 36 sailboat. Luckily her mechanical abilities and fortitude were critical in holding the vessel and captain together and, with string and ingenuity, they eventually arrived in one piece!
By the time she left Antigua she was working on a luxurious 100 ft motor yacht but jumped at the chance to work on a racing yacht. Since then she has had the opportunity to restore and run the beautiful sailing yacht Cap II.
