Sciacca at first glance may look like rather scruffy, a fishing port, but it will grow on you. Narrow streets around the harbour lead up to the town via brightly tiled steps. The local people have a quiet pride in their town and justly so. In June the whole town turns out for the festival of San Pietro, patron of the sea. The church is down near the harbour, and it is said that if you touch the statue of San Pietro he will bring you fair winds. It is volcanic activity underneath the town that gives rise to the main attraction for many visitors to Sciacca.
