Alghero was founded by the Dorias in the 12th century and then conquered by Pedro IV of Aragon, becoming Catalan two century later. Today it preserves the flavour of a Spanish town and some of the older fishermen still speak Catalan. The walled town incorporates a Gothic style cathedral, Gothic chapels and old towers. Bright tiles decorates the old houses and porches and many of the streets have kept their Spanish names. The setting in what is locally known as the Golfo del Corallo in enchanting with sandy beaches and, behind, rolling wooded hills.
